An Indian shop in Poland is where you find the ingredients of home. Little India has six Indian shops in Poland: three in Warsaw and one each in Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk, plus an online shop that delivers across Poland. It sells what an Indian kitchen needs: basmati and South Indian rice, atta, dals, whole and ground spices, fresh Indian vegetables, snacks, sweets, frozen food, pooja items and Indian cosmetics. In Polish an Indian shop is "sklep indyjski", which is also the phrase to use on Google Maps.

A note on Sundays: most shops in Poland are closed on Sundays, except on a few "trading Sundays" ("niedziele handlowe") each year. The two central Warsaw shops open on those days. For more on the capital, read our guide to the Indian store in Warsaw.

Ordering online

If you live outside these four cities, or you do not want to carry a 10 kg rice sack on the tram, order from the Little India online shop. The shop sends parcels to addresses across Poland. You choose the products on the website and the order comes to your door. The delivery options and costs are on the shop website.

Many customers combine the two: heavy, long-life items (rice, atta, oil, dals) by courier, and fresh vegetables, paneer and sweets from a shop visit.

What an Indian shop in Poland sells

Rice and flours

Basmati for biryani and pulao, sona masoori and ponni for South Indian meals, idli rice, matta rice and jasmine rice. See the rice category. For rotis there is atta (whole-wheat chapati flour, "mąka pszenna razowa"), besan, rice flour and millet flours, for example Aashirvaad whole-wheat atta.

Dals, beans and pulses

Toor, masoor, moong, urad and chana dal, plus rajma, kala chana and lobia. Look in the lentils category. Polish supermarkets usually sell red lentils and chickpeas; for toor and urad dal, go to an Indian shop.

Spices

Whole and ground spices in sizes from small packs to 1 kg bags, and masala blends from MDH, Everest, Suhana and other brands, in herbs and spices. Buying spices in bigger bags is one of the main reasons to visit an Indian shop rather than a supermarket.

Fresh vegetables and herbs

Curry leaves, fresh coriander, green chillies, okra, drumstick, karela (bitter gourd), taro (arbi) and fresh ginger. What is in the shop changes with the season. See fresh vegetables and fruit.

Snacks, sweets and frozen food

Haldiram's namkeen, bhujia and Indian biscuits are in snacks. Gulab jamun, soan papdi, kaju katli and other mithai are in festival sweets. Frozen Indian food is in the frozen category.

Pooja items and cosmetics

Diyas, agarbatti (incense sticks), camphor, kumkum and other puja items are in pooja items. Hair oils, soaps, toothpaste and other Indian brands are in cosmetics.

Little India also sells Nepali, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, African, Thai and Latin American products, so the customers are not only Indian.

Tips for a first visit

  • Bring a list with the English and the Hindi names. Many packs carry both.
  • Check the date on fresh paneer and frozen food, as you would anywhere.
  • Before Diwali, Holi and Eid, the shops can be busy. Go early in the day.
  • Big rice and atta sacks are heavy. If you come by public transport, order those online instead.
