Kandahari (kautabak) is a hygienic form of chewing tobacco, often found in South and Central Asia. It is prepared from moist tobacco leaves, which are shaped into slices or balls and placed in the cheek — allowing nicotine to be absorbed slowly through the mucous membranes of the mouth. This product does not require burning, which eliminates the inhalation of smoke; however, it does not reduce the risk of serious diseases. Long-term use leads to nicotine addiction and can cause chronic irritation, pain, tooth discoloration, and gum damage. Studies have shown that chewing tobacco significantly increases the risk of developing cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, pancreas, and lung cancer. Additionally, chewing tobacco is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and stroke. Users' teeth often suffer from discoloration, faster decay, and gum recession. Furthermore, using kautabak during pregnancy increases the risk of premature birth and low birth weight of the fetus. Although many users perceive kautabak as a discreet alternative to smoking due to the lack of smoke and odor, it is a form of highly addictive and potentially carcinogenic product that poses serious health risks. There is no safe level of its use, and the only effective way is complete cessation or support in quitting the addiction.
